Food Safety Modernization Act

Over the past decade, the number of food products recalled in the United States has surged from a few hundred annually to thousands of products in 2009. Due to persistent consumer concerns about the safety of imported foods and the growing complexity of the food supply chain, the Food and Drug Administration sought expanded regulatory authority to ensure the safety of the U.S. food supply. On January 4, 2011, the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was signed into law.

Hailed as the most sweeping overhaul of food safety legislation in the U.S. in over 60 years, FSMA places a higher premium on preventing foodborne illness and grants the FDA additional powers to pursue a more science-based food safety system. The regulation covers a wide range of safety initiatives, ranging from product traceability to mandatory food recalls. While different aspects of the law will go into effect according to timetables set by the FDA, the food industry is endeavoring to wrap its arms around the new law.

Silliker, Inc., the leading network of food testing and consulting laboratories, can help you understand the overriding impact and underlying nuances of the regulation. Our professionals can provide you with expert services to keep your food safety management program aligned with FSMA rules.

As part of our efforts to keep you informed and empowered, we have developed a White Paper, "Food Safety Modernization Act: Marking a New Era in U.S. Food Safety." The insightful summary covers three major centerpieces – preventive controls, inspections and compliance, and import monitoring – encompassing the new legislation. It also highlights a number of key platforms, including:
  • Food safety plans
  • Performance standards
  • Risk-based inspections
  • Foreign supplier verification
  • Laboratory accreditation
  • Inspection of records
  • Registration of food facilities
  • Produce standards
  • Accreditation for third-party auditors

"The operational and scientific challenges posed by the Food Safety Modernization Act are varied, requiring preparation and planning," said Dr. Russ Flowers, Silliker Chief Scientific Officer. "With our total solution services, Silliker can help the food industry keep their safety management programs current with the new law."
